In 2025, the Nonhuman Rights Project will...

  • Argue before a Michigan intermediate appellate court that our seven chimpanzee clients are entitled to a hearing in the trial court on the lawfulness of their imprisonment and judicial recognition of their right to liberty
  • Argue before a Hawaii intermediate appellate court that our elephant clients Mari and Vaigai are entitled to a hearing in the trial court on the lawfulness of their imprisonment and judicial recognition of their right to liberty
  • File new nonhuman animal rights litigation in a new US state and lay the groundwork for future litigation on behalf of nonhuman animal clients in other states
  • File our first lawsuit on behalf of a captive cetacean
  • Monitor the introduction of laws that strip courts of the authority to recognize the rights or duties of nonhuman entities, including nonhuman animals, and challenge these laws when appropriate
  • File amicus briefs in cases that strategically advance the legal status of nonhuman animals and strengthen the foundation for nonhuman rights
  • Investigate and launch expanded legal strategies that complement our habeas corpus work by pursuing additional rights and protections for nonhuman animals through diverse areas of law
  • Continue to work with lawmakers in New York City to pass the first bill in the US that would ban the captivity of elephants and require the Bronx Zoo to release Happy and Patty to a sanctuary
  • Continue meeting with lawmakers around the United States to discuss the importance of nonhuman rights
  • Continue our grassroots advocacy campaigns to free our clients to sanctuaries
  • Continue providing thought leadership that inspires, strengthens, and grows the national and international nonhuman rights movement
